As the world marks the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture on June 26, attention is on efforts to promote justice, protect human rights, and uphold human dignity.
In Anambra State, Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration has pursued policies aimed at improving security, expanding social welfare and reducing the conditions that fuel violence and abuse.
Through the Anambra Homeland Security Law and Operation Udo Ga-Achi, the government has intensified the fight against kidnapping, cultism, drug abuse, and other crimes. The initiative combines intelligence, surveillance, rapid response and community collaboration to make the state safer.
The administration has also emphasized rehabilitation and reintegration for those willing to abandon crime, reflecting the belief that lasting peace requires both enforcement and inclusion.
Beyond security, the government has invested in free education, healthcare, youth empowerment and skills acquisition to improve lives, reducing the socio-economic pressures that contribute to crime and rights abuses.
It has also strengthened drug control campaigns and community policing, encouraging residents to report crime through lawful channels and discouraging mob justice.
As the global call against torture and degrading treatment continues, Anambra’s focus on security, rehabilitation and social welfare highlights the role of responsive governance in protecting fundamental rights and human dignity.
