The traditional ruler of Obosi Kingdom in Anambra State, HRM Igwe Chidubem Iweka (Eze Iweka III), has honoured Professor Nnamdi Benson Onyire, a professor of medicine at Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, with the prestigious chieftaincy title of Akadire Obosi in recognition of his professional achievements, philanthropy and contributions to community development.
The honour was conferred on Prof. Onyire during the 15th Iwaji/Obiora Festival, celebrated at the Obosi Township Stadium on Oct.24.
Igwe Iweka, who also chairs the Anambra State Traditional Rulers’ Council, recognised the professor’s distinguished medical career, mentorship of younger medical professionals, research contributions, philanthropic activities and leadership achievements.

Beyond his accomplishments in medicine, Prof. Onyire has made significant contributions to the development of Obosi and the advancement of its people.
During his tenure as the pioneer president of the Obosi Development Union (ODU), Enugu Branch, he spearheaded the rebuilding of the branch’s building, leaving a lasting mark on the union’s institutional development.
He currently serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Obosi Village Square (OVS), a WhatsApp based think tank that brings together prominent Obosi indigenes to support traditional and political institutions through leadership initiatives and community development efforts.
His contributions extend to helping individuals pursue educational opportunities, achieve career ambitions and secure employment in both public and private organisations.
Prof. Onyire’s personal journey has become a source of encouragement to younger generations, particularly those facing difficult circumstances in their pursuit of education and professional success.
His experience of a deprived childhood and subsequent rise to prominence in medicine has inspired many to persevere in their academic, business, literary and artistic pursuits.
His story reflects the enduring belief that determination, opportunity and perseverance can help people overcome difficult beginnings and achieve their ambitions.
For many young people in Obosi, his life represents a powerful example of resilience and the possibilities that emerge when challenges do not become barriers to success.
Long before the latest honour, HRM Eze John Nwosu of Isiokwu Ihioma community in Imo State had also conferred the title of Akadire on Prof. Onyire.
The professor expressed gratitude to Igwe Iweka for the recognition, describing it as a gesture of respect that further strengthened his connection with his community.
He acknowledged Chief Omezie Onyire, who holds the traditional title of Agba Obosi, for the family leadership and guidance that contributed positively to his development.
Obosi, an ancient community in Anambra State, has produced several prominent Nigerians, including Chief Emeka Anyaoku, former Secretary General of the Commonwealth; the late Chief Chimezie Ikeazor, a legal luminary and founder of the Free Legal Aid Council; Chief Mike Ajegbo, a former senator; and Chief Osita Chidoka, a former Minister of Aviation.
Prof. Onyire received the Akadire Obosi title alongside Chief Augustine Chuks Mgbemena, who was honoured as Ikukuoma Obosi, and Chief Darlington Okenwa, who received the title Igiligi Ogu Obosi.
The three titleholders share a commitment to applying their knowledge, professional expertise and resources to promote community development and improve the welfare of Obosi people.
Their recognition highlights the community’s appreciation of individuals whose contributions extend beyond personal accomplishments to the collective progress of their people.
The conferment of the Akadire Obosi title on Prof. Onyire underscores the importance of professional excellence, philanthropy, mentorship and community service in building a lasting legacy.
