Children’s behaviour has become an important issue of concern in society, as parents, teachers, and community leaders continue to emphasize the need for proper upbringing, moral education, and discipline among young people.
Children are the future leaders of every society, and their behaviour plays a significant role in determining the future of the community.
However, the increasing influence of social media, peer pressure, poor parental guidance, and exposure to negative social activities has raised concerns about the behavioural development of some children.
Mrs kelechi Egenti, one of the observers have noted that children’s behaviour is largely influenced by their home environment, schools, friends, and the society in which they grow up.
Mrs Egenti said that Children who receive proper guidance, love, discipline, and moral education are more likely to develop positive attitudes and become responsible members of the society.
She added that children who lack adequate parental attention and supervision may develop negative behaviours such as disrespect for elders, dishonesty, aggression, bullying, and disobedience to constituted authority. Which can affect their academic performance, relationships with others.
Another observer, Mr ikechukwu Esimone, explained that the influence of social media has also become a major concern, as some children are exposed to inappropriate content, violence, indecent behaviour, and other negative influences.
“Without proper supervision, these exposures may affect their attitudes, communication, and understanding of acceptable social values”, he said.
“Furthermore, peer pressure can influence children to engage in activities that may negatively affect their education, health, and personal development. This makes it necessary for parents and guardians to pay close attention to the friends their children keep and the activities they participate in.
Educationists and child-development advocates emphasize that parents have a significant responsibility to shape the behaviour of their children through good examples, effective communication, supervision, and appropriate discipline.
Schools also have an important role to play by teaching moral values, promoting respect, encouraging responsible conduct, and providing guidance and counselling where necessary.
Community leaders, religious organizations, and government agencies are equally encouraged to support programmes that promote child protection, moral education, and positive youth development.
It is important to note that not every behavioural challenge among children is caused by bad parenting. Some behaviours may be associated with developmental changes, emotional difficulties, and bullying, or other challenges that require understanding and professional support rather than punishment alone.
Children’s behavioural effects in the society cannot be overlooked, as the attitudes children develop today can influence the future of the community.
