The Mayor of Idemili South Local Government Area, Hon. Amaka Obi, has officially flagged off the Idemili South Healthy Living Sports Competition, reaffirming her administration’s commitment to youth development, healthy living and community integration.
The colourful opening ceremony, held on July 25 at the Council Field in Ojoto, attracted participating teams, community leaders, government officials, traditional rulers, party faithful and sports enthusiasts from across the local government area.
Speaking at the event, Hon. Obi described sports as a powerful instrument for promoting peace, unity, discipline and healthy competition among young people. She noted that the initiative was designed to identify and nurture sporting talents, encourage healthy lifestyles and strengthen relationships among communities in Idemili South.
The Mayor urged participants to uphold the values of fairness, discipline and mutual respect throughout the competition, emphasizing that true victory lies not only in winning trophies but also in building lasting friendships and fostering peaceful coexistence.
She reiterated her administration’s resolve to continue investing in programmes that positively engage youths, promote grassroots sports and create opportunities for talented individuals to thrive expressing confidence that the competition would promote healthy living, peaceful coexistence and stronger community bonds throughout the local government area.
The competition features football matches involving teams from various communities across Idemili South, with outstanding teams and exceptional players to be honoured with prizes and awards at the grand finale.
Among the dignitaries present were the Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, alongside government officials, traditional rulers, political stakeholders and sports lovers.
