The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Onitsha, has secured approval from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria (NPMCN) to commence residency training in Family Medicine.
The approval, granted on Oct. 10, followed an accreditation exercise during which assessors evaluated the department’s facilities, personnel, clinical services and compliance with residency training requirements.
The Medical Director, Dr. Mercy Anugwu, expressed appreciation to the accreditation team and commended staff members for their dedication, teamwork and contributions to the exercise.
Anugwu described the approval as a milestone for the hospital, noting that the programme would strengthen postgraduate medical education, improve clinical service delivery and enhance manpower development.
The accreditation team leader, Dr. Moses Akin, said the decision followed an assessment of the resources and activities of the Family Medicine Department.
Akin urged the hospital management to implement the team’s recommendations promptly, sustain the progress made and maintain the required standards.
He also commended the hospital’s commitment to meeting accreditation requirements despite its relatively young institutional status.
Earlier, the Head of Family Medicine, Dr. Henry Obidimma, expressed appreciation to the Medical Director for providing the facilities and support needed for the accreditation exercise.
The approval is expected to strengthen FMC Onitsha’s contribution to specialist medical training and healthcare delivery.
