Property worth millions of naira has been destroyed following a heavy rainfall that triggered flooding in Nnewi, Nnewi North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
Victims, alongside the Anambra State Chairman of the Motorcycle Transport Welfare Association, Comrade Jude Udegbe, attributed the incident to poor drainage infrastructure along the Nnobi Road axis of the Agulu–Nnewi–Okija road project.
Comrade Udegbe disclosed that he had earlier written to the State Commissioner for Works, copying Governor Chukwuma Soludo, to complain about inadequate and poorly connected drainage systems in the area.
Residents reported that the flood overflowed from the GUO Motor Park through Izuchukwu Junction, with the situation worsening around Deeper Life Junction due to gaps in the drainage network.
Some affected residents recounted significant losses, including damaged homes, submerged vehicles, and destroyed goods and household items.
A trader, Mrs. Mary Nwabueze, said she lost goods and a freezer valued at over ₦250,000, while others also reported severe damage to their homes and properties.
The residents have called on the state government and contractors handling the road project to urgently address the drainage issues and provide relief assistance to victims.
According to the residents, lives were allegedly lost in the incident.
