The Director of Social Communications, Awka Diocese, and Director of Fides Media Ltd., Rev. Fr. Mark Obiora Ikeh, has expressed commitment to reviving the Catholic Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria (CAMPAN) in the diocese.
Ikeh made the commitment on Sept. 8, at his maiden meeting with selected members of CAMPAN, Awka Diocese, held at the Archbishop A.K. Obiefuna Auditorium, Fides Media Complex, Awka.
The meeting was attended by the CAMPAN Chairman, Mr. Ndu Okpalaeze; Secretary, Mr. Osita Okechukwu Eze; Publicity Secretary, Sir Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu; former Anambra Commissioner for Information, Sir Paul Nwosu; and former Managing Director/Editor-in-Chief of the Anambra State Newspaper and Printing Corporation, Sir Chuka Nnabuife.
Others were Mr. Chris Obileri, Manager, News, Radio Nigeria Purity FM, Awka, and Sir Jude Atupulazi, Editor-in-Chief of Fides Newspaper, among others.
Ikeh apologised for the decline in the association’s activities over the years, saying he recently appreciated its importance after studying its constitution.
He observed that CAMPAN appeared to be more active in the northern part of the country than in the South-East, stressing the need to revive its activities in Awka Diocese and subsequently across the ecclesiastical province.
According to him, a vibrant association would contribute to evangelisation, promotion of social ethics, responsible communication, media content regulation and protection of the corporate image of the Catholic Church.
Ikeh said the Bishop of Awka Diocese was supportive of efforts to reactivate CAMPAN, adding that he also regretted the failure to commemorate the recently concluded World Communications Day.
Responding, Okpalaeze thanked Ikeh for initiating the meeting, describing the move as a response to members’ concerns over the prolonged inactivity of the association.
He recalled that CAMPAN was particularly active during the tenure of Rev. Fr. Martin Anusi as Fides Director, when activities, including annual World Communications Day celebrations, were regularly organised.
Other members, including Nnabuife, Nwosu and Obileri, expressed support for the revival and stressed the need for regular meetings, visible activities and collaboration among Catholic media practitioners.
The members agreed that CAMPAN, Awka Diocese, would hold its monthly meetings on the second Monday of every month at 4 p.m. at the Fides Media Complex, Awka.
