‎Environmental experts and advocates have called for sustained and stronger measures to protect the ozone layer and preserve the progress achieved in reducing substances that contribute to its depletion.
‎
‎The call was made as the world marks the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer, observed annually on Sept. 16 to raise awareness about the vital role of the ozone layer in shielding the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
‎
‎The 2026 observance provides an opportunity to reflect on global efforts to phase out ozone-depleting substances while encouraging governments, industries and individuals to adopt environmentally responsible practices.
‎The ozone layer has suffered significant damage from chemicals formerly used extensively in refrigeration, air-conditioning systems, aerosols and other products.
‎
‎However, international cooperation, particularly through the Montreal Protocol, has contributed significantly to reducing the production and consumption of many ozone-depleting substances and improving the condition of the ozone layer.
‎
‎Despite the progress recorded, experts stressed the need for continued vigilance to protect the gains made and address emerging environmental challenges.
‎They urged governments to strengthen the enforcement of environmental regulations, promote climate-friendly technologies and intensify public awareness campaigns on the importance of ozone protection.
‎
‎Individuals and businesses were also encouraged to ensure the responsible use, maintenance and disposal of refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment, while embracing alternatives with lower environmental impacts.
‎
‎The observance serves as a reminder that protecting the ozone layer requires sustained global cooperation, responsible environmental practices and a collective commitment to safeguarding the planet for present and future generations.
