The Commissioner for Environment Anambra State, Dr Clem Aguiyi says the state will no longer tolerate any form of irresponsible excavation, soil removal, or sand mining, especially near erosion-prone areas, gully sites, wetlands, watersheds, or natural drainage channels.

According to him, any form of earth-disturbing activities that cause environmental degradation or threaten community safety will be shut down immediately, warning that operators would face prosecution and would bear the full cost of environmental remediation.

Addressing the Anambra Sewage Association in his Jerome Udoji Secretariat office in Awka on May 20, the Environment Commissioner announced that it is a new era in the environmental sector and any form of indiscriminate littering will not be condoned.

According to him, Mr Governor has made a resolve to leave a long lasting landmark in the sector volumes in the nearest future.

He reiterated, that the goal is not just about a clean, green environment but long term sustainability that would be impactful to
the citizens.

“The goal is to safeguard public health, strengthen climate resilience, prevent flooding and erosion, and ensure orderly, sustainable environmental management across all communities in the State.

“With immediate effect, it is prohibited to discharge raw sewage, wastewater, or effluent into drains, gutters, channels, water bodies, or open lands. All hotels, estates, markets, fuel stations, abattoirs, institutions, and other public places must adhere to the standard.”

Reacting, the Chairman of Anambra Sewage Association, Chief Ignatius Okonta, congratulated Mr Commissioner for his appointment, pledges to work in accordance with the set standard of the state government.

He, however, commended the state government on massive ongoing road projects at the Aguleri Road by Nkwelle Junction, 33.

While praying for the need for extension of the ongoing project to the point of their effluent discharge which is at the end of the road, he noted that as the rain approaches, it might make it difficult for them to ply if not addressed accordingly.

On his part, the former Chairman of the sewage Association Alexander Ezeobi, lauds Governor Soludo on the new appointment of an environment savvy commissioner, promising to abide by the set standard in the course of their duty.
