The ancient community of Enugwu-Ukwu na Umunri came alive with colour, tradition, and cultural pride as it celebrated the 950th edition of the revered Ikpọ Ji festival on July 30, the annual sanctification of the new yam and one of the oldest surviving cultural rites in Igboland.
The historic event attracted thousands of indigenes, traditional rulers, dignitaries, tourists, and visitors from within and outside Anambra State, reaffirming Enugwu-Ukwu’s unique role in preserving a tradition performed on behalf of the entire Igbo nation.

The sacred rites were conducted by Ọzọnkpụ Chief Mac Benito Ozigbo, following his nomination by His Royal Majesty, Igwe Ralph Obumnemeh Ekpeh.
Amid traditional prayers, rhythmic drumming, and cultural dances, Chief Ozigbo blessed the new yam, officially declaring it fit for sale and consumption across Igboland. The ceremony, which traces its origin to Okpalanakana, the first son of Nri, has been observed continuously in Enugwu-Ukwu for nearly a millennium.

Highlights of the celebration included special prayers for peace, prosperity, and a bountiful harvest, a colourful royal procession led by the Igwe-in-Council and Ndi Nze na Ozo, the distribution of sanctified yams to members of the community, traditional visits to the royal palace and the residence of the celebrant, as well as captivating cultural performances and masquerade displays.
Community leaders described the 950th Ikpọ Ji festival as a powerful symbol of the resilience and continuity of Igbo cultural and spiritual heritage.

Speaking during the celebration, one of the palace chiefs said the festival represents far more than the annual harvest. “Today is not just about yam. It is about thanking God, remembering our roots, and passing this legacy to the next generation. For 950 years, Enugwu-Ukwu has carried this responsibility for Ndi Igbo,” he said.
Residents, including Mr. Afam, who received the blessed yam, expressed joy and gratitude, describing the occasion as a cherished cultural and spiritual experience. The festival also attracted prominent personalities from government, religious institutions, and the diaspora, further showcasing Anambra State’s rich cultural heritage while promoting tourism and community unity.
Security agencies, working in collaboration with the festival organising committee, ensured the event was peaceful, orderly, and hitch-free.
