Residents of Enekwasupum in Idemili North Local Government Area recorded an impressive turnout on July 25 as they participated in the Anambra State Government’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise.
The exercise featured extensive clearing of drainage channels, sweeping of streets, evacuation of refuse, grass cutting, and other environmental cleanup activities aimed at promoting a healthier and cleaner community.
Speaking during the exercise, the General Chairman of John Nwadigbo Street, Mr. Arinze Okeke, praised residents for their commitment and active participation, describing the turnout as a reflection of the community’s sense of responsibility and collective ownership of its environment.

He stressed the importance of keeping drainage channels free of debris, noting that the measure would help prevent flooding and reduce the risk of disease outbreaks, particularly during the peak of the rainy season.
Chairmen of various compounds also used the opportunity to educate residents on the need to maintain clean surroundings at all times, emphasizing that environmental cleanliness is essential for good health and overall wellbeing.
Across the community, youths, women, men, and children actively took part in clearing overgrown vegetation, desilting gutters, sweeping roads, and removing waste from public spaces.
Some residents who spoke with information officers described the sanitation exercise as timely and beneficial, urging the Anambra State Government to sustain the monthly initiative to encourage a lasting culture of environmental cleanliness.
Security personnel and members of the local vigilante group monitored the exercise to ensure compliance with the government’s restriction of movement during the sanitation period.
The exercise concluded peacefully, with residents expressing satisfaction over the cleaner environment and renewing their commitment to sustaining proper sanitation practices beyond the monthly exercise.
