The Anambra State Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Mrs. Chinyere Esther Onyekesi, has paid tribute to the resilience, strength and outstanding contributions of African women and girls as the world marks the International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent.
In a statement issued on July 24 to commemorate the occasion, Mrs. Onyekesi described African women and girls as the pillars of families, communities and nations, applauding their unwavering commitment to social, economic and cultural development.
She noted that despite numerous challenges, African women and girls have continued to distinguish themselves through resilience, innovation and excellence in leadership, education, business, public service and other sectors, making significant contributions to national development.
The commissioner reaffirmed the commitment of the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Social Welfare, under the administration of Governor Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, to implementing policies and programmes that promote gender equality, safeguard the rights of women and girls, and expand opportunities for their advancement.
She stated that the ministry would continue to prioritise initiatives that enhance access to quality education, leadership development, skills acquisition and economic empowerment, enabling women and girls to achieve their full potential.
Mrs. Onyekesi also urged families, traditional and community leaders, development partners and other stakeholders to strengthen collaborative efforts aimed at supporting the aspirations and well-being of African women and girls. According to her, empowering women and girls remains critical to building stronger families, resilient communities and a more prosperous society.
The International Day of Women and Girls of African Descent is observed annually to celebrate the achievements, cultural heritage and contributions of women and girls of African descent, while promoting greater inclusion, equality and opportunities for their advancement.
