The Mayor of Ekwusigo Local Government Area, Hon. Chimezie James Obi, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to promoting an inclusive society by protecting the rights and improving the welfare of persons with disabilities through sustained collaboration with key stakeholders.
The assurance was given during a strategic meeting with members of the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPID) at the Ekwusigo Local Government Council Hall on July 1.
The engagement provided an opportunity to discuss challenges facing persons with disabilities in the council area and explore practical measures to strengthen inclusion, expand access to opportunities, and improve their overall wellbeing.
Speaking at the meeting, Hon. Obi said his administration is focused on building a people-centred government where every resident, regardless of physical ability, has equal access to opportunities, empowerment programmes, and public services.
He praised JONAPID for its consistent advocacy and dedication to advancing the rights of persons with disabilities, describing the association as a valuable partner in promoting social inclusion across the local government.
The Mayor further assured the delegation of the council’s readiness to continue working with JONAPID and other relevant stakeholders to implement policies and initiatives that encourage equal participation and enhance the quality of life of persons with disabilities in Ekwusigo.
Members of JONAPID commended the Mayor for granting them an audience and expressed appreciation for his willingness to engage with the disability community on matters affecting their welfare.
The meeting ended with both parties reaffirming their commitment to sustained collaboration and joint efforts towards building a more inclusive Ekwusigo, where persons with disabilities can fully participate in community life and contribute meaningfully to the area’s development.
