The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, CP Nnanna-Oji Ama, has called on youths in the state to stay away from drug abuse and engage in productive activities that can positively impact their lives and society. CP Nnanna-Oji Ama made the call on Aug. 18 while receiving the leadership of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Anambra State Chapter, in his office ahead of the association’s 2026 Sports Week.
The two-day sporting event, with the theme “Sports for Peace and Economic Empowerment,” is scheduled to take place on August 20 and 21 at the Cosmilla Hotels Sports Arena, commencing at 3:00 p.m. daily.
The Police Commissioner endorsed the initiative, describing sports as an effective means of promoting physical fitness, mental alertness and the positive utilisation of energy, particularly among young people. He further solicited the support and cooperation of the media and residents of Anambra State in the collective effort to ensure that the state remains safe and secure.
CP Nnanna-Oji Ama also approved the participation of the Police team in the competition and expressed his commitment to repositioning the sports department of the Command for improved performance and competitiveness. He charged SWAN and the participating teams to uphold the spirit of fair play, noting that the competition should go beyond winning to promoting friendship, unity and stronger relationships among the participants.
Earlier, the Chairman of SWAN, Anambra State Chapter, Chimezie Anaso, said the Sports Week was organised to encourage physical fitness, mental alertness and healthy relaxation among journalists and the participating teams.
Anaso said the event would also provide an opportunity for sports writers, athletes, sports enthusiasts and other stakeholders to interact, compete and promote sporting excellence in Anambra State. The Sports Week will feature five-a-side football, table tennis, draughts and ludo, among other recreational activities.
The Anambra State Football Association (ANSFA) and the All Stars Football Club of Awka have confirmed their participation in the games, while the Anambra State Police Command and Demila Gold Ice are also supporting the event.
The organisers said the 2026 SWAN Sports Week is part of the association’s broader effort to use sports as a vehicle for peace-building, unity, stronger social connections and economic empowerment. The event carries the slogan, “Uniting Sports Writers, Promoting Sports Excellence!”
