The spirit of giving back and community partnership came alive at Igwebuike Grammar School, Awka, as the school’s Class of ’81 Old Boys Association commissioned a newly constructed eight-room segregated toilet facility to improve the learning environment for students.

The project, donated by the old boys as part of their commitment to their alma mater, was officially commissioned on June 25,, by the Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, who was represented by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Education, Mr. Christian Chukwuemeka.

Speaking at the event, Dr. Ogugua commended the Class of ’81 set for investing in the school that nurtured them, describing the gesture as a shining example of responsible alumni engagement and a practical contribution to educational development in the state.

He noted that the collaboration between the old boys and the school management aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s Public-Private-Community Partnership (PPCP) initiative, which encourages individuals, communities and organisations to complement government efforts in bridging infrastructure and other gaps in the education sector.

The Commissioner expressed optimism that the partnership would continue to grow, resulting in more developmental projects that would further strengthen education in the state.

Speaking on behalf of the Class of ’81 Old Boys Association, Barrister Alfred Opuka said the decision to build the facility was informed by the need identified in the school and the association’s desire to give back to the institution that played a significant role in shaping their lives and careers.

The Principal of Igwebuike Grammar School, Mrs. Ifebi Ukamaka, described the old boys association as the backbone of infrastructure development in the school, noting that their support predates the school’s designation as a Smart School by the state government.

According to her, the association has executed several intervention projects over the years, including the renovation of school buildings, repairs of damaged roofs, and the ongoing construction of a mini stadium to promote sporting and recreational activities among students.

The event climaxed with the official commissioning of the toilet facility and a colourful rendition of songs by students, who expressed appreciation for the gesture and celebrated the enduring bond between the school and its alumni.
