The Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, has warned Principals of public secondary schools against illegal levies, examination malpractice and poor accountability during a familiarisation meeting at ASUBEB Hall, Awka on July 7.
Addressing principals, Dr. Ogugua described them as the face of government in their schools, urging them to demonstrate exemplary leadership, discipline and integrity in discharging their responsibilities.
He stressed that Principals must lead by example, saying teachers and students cannot be expected to exhibit excellence where school administrators fail to uphold high moral and professional standards in service.
The Commissioner frowned at reports that some Principals still impose financial burdens on parents despite Governor Charles Soludo’s free education policy, warning that such practices would no longer be tolerated by government authorities.

Dr. Ogugua also condemned examination malpractice, insisting that public schools must never become miracle centres. He reminded principals that they remain the chief security and accounting officers of their respective schools.
He charged them to safeguard government facilities, maintain accurate financial records and ensure prudent management of school resources, stressing that accountability and transparency remain indispensable qualities of effective educational leadership.

The Commissioner underscored the importance of community engagement, urging principals to strengthen partnerships with Parent-Teacher Associations, Old Boys’ and Old Girls’ Associations and host communities to address challenges confronting public schools.
During the interactive session, principals highlighted inadequate infrastructure, teacher shortages, insecurity, insufficient school buses and lack of digital tools. Dr. Ogugua assured them that the ministry would address the identified challenges.
Delivering the vote of thanks, ANCOPSS Chairman and Principal of Community Secondary School, Oraifite, Mrs. Hope Ezeani, pledged the principals’ support for Governor Charles Soludo’s vision of transforming Anambra’s education sector.
