Cooperatives for Peace and Prosperity: Anambra’s Collective Economic Vision
By Lilian Ezejiegu
Every first Saturday in July, the world marks the International Day of Cooperatives, celebrating the vital role cooperative societies play in promoting sustainable development, economic growth, and social progress globally.
The 2026 theme, “Cooperatives for a Peaceful World,” highlights how cooperative enterprises promote social justice, unity, and inclusion, helping communities build trust, peace, and shared prosperity.
In today’s world, faced with inequality, division, and economic hardship, cooperatives remind us that peace goes beyond ending conflict; it requires fairness, opportunity, dialogue, and collective responsibility.
In Anambra State, cooperative living is not new. It reflects the traditional Igbo spirit of communal support, where people work together for common goals.
The administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo continues to promote cooperative enterprises as powerful tools for economic inclusion, poverty reduction, and sustainable community development across the state.
Through farmers’ groups, traders’ associations, thrift societies, and development unions, the government is expanding opportunities for citizens to access funding, markets, and stronger economic partnerships.
The empowerment initiatives of Nonye Soludo have also strengthened women’s cooperatives, providing skills, resources, and mentorship that support entrepreneurship, financial independence, and lasting community growth.
Built on principles like democratic control, shared participation, education, independence, cooperation, and community concern, cooperatives align strongly with Anambra’s vision of an inclusive, prosperous, and peaceful homeland.
As the world celebrates this important day, Anambra reaffirms its commitment to cooperative-driven development, where unity builds strength, shared efforts create wealth, and collective prosperity leaves no one behind.
