The Bishop on the Niger, Rt. Rev. Owen Chiedozie Nwokolo, has called on Christians to remain steadfast in advancing the Gospel, saying evangelism remains the collective responsibility of all believers.
Nwokolo made the call on July 26, during the Confirmation and Admission Service at St. John’s Anglican Church, Eziowelle, Abatete Archdeaconry, held as part of activities marking the 169th anniversary of the Church Missionary Society (CMS).
Despite persistent rainfall, worshippers and confirmation candidates participated actively in the service, demonstrating their commitment to the Christian faith.
Preaching from John 1:1 and Genesis 1:1–3, the bishop said the Gospel of Jesus Christ had become firmly rooted in the land and urged Christians to preserve and propagate the faith for future generations.
He described Christ as the eternal Word through whom light came into the world at creation, adding that the same Word continues to illuminate lives and bring salvation to humanity.
Nwokolo urged believers to fulfil the Great Commission by proclaiming the Gospel in their communities and beyond, stressing that the task of evangelism should not be left to the clergy alone.
Addressing the confirmation candidates and those admitted into full communion, he encouraged them to remain unwavering in their faith, overcome life’s challenges through Christ and commit themselves to the service of God and His Church.
He further urged them to allow the Word of God to direct their thoughts, decisions and actions, noting that genuine discipleship is anchored on obedience, faithfulness and a commitment to making Christ known.
The service formed part of the Diocese on the Niger’s commemoration of the 169th anniversary of the arrival of the Church Missionary Society in Igboland, underscoring the Church’s enduring commitment to evangelism, discipleship and spiritual growth.
