The Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University Teaching Hospital (COOUTH), Amaku, Awka, Dr. Maureen Uche Umeakuewulu, on July 27 monitored the commencement of the hospital’s week-long free cancer screening exercise.
The programme was organised in celebration of the birthdays of the Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, and his wife, Mrs. Nonye Soludo.
The screening exercise, which runs until July 31, offers free cervical cancer (Pap smear), mammography, and Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) screening to encourage the early detection and prevention of cervical, breast, and prostate cancers.
During the inspection, Dr. Umeakuewulu toured the various screening centres to ensure the exercise was being conducted efficiently and in line with the hospital’s high standards of quality healthcare delivery.
She also interacted with healthcare workers and beneficiaries, urging members of staff to maintain professionalism while delivering prompt, courteous, and patient-centred services.
Expressing satisfaction with the smooth conduct of the exercise, the Chief Medical Director reaffirmed COOUTH’s commitment to promoting preventive healthcare through early diagnosis and timely medical intervention.
She encouraged eligible women and men to take advantage of the free screening programme before it concludes on July 31, emphasizing that early detection remains one of the most effective strategies for reducing the burden of cancer and improving treatment outcomes.
