The Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), has organised a one-day train the trainers workshop to strengthen the teaching and learning of Igbo language in primary schools across the state.
The July 9 workshop, held at the ASUBEB Utility Hall in Awka, had the theme, “Reawakening Igbo Language Activities in Basic Schools in Anambra State,” and brought together teachers, educators and language experts to enhance Igbo language instruction at the basic education level.

Speaking at the event, the Executive Chairman of ASUBEB, Dr. Justina Anyadiegwu, described language as the bedrock of a people’s identity, noting that the extinction of a language inevitably threatens the survival of its culture and traditions.
She reaffirmed the board’s commitment to revitalising Igbo language education in primary schools, stressing that children learn more effectively in their mother tongue.
Anyadiegwu also commended the Anambra State Government, under the leadership of Gov. Chukwuma Soludo, for its sustained support for policies and programmes that promote Igbo language and cultural heritage.
The workshop featured practical sessions on teaching pupils to read and write the Igbo alphabet, as well as the correct application of tone marks to enhance literacy and pronunciation.
Participants were introduced to learner centred teaching strategies and urged to apply the knowledge acquired to improve classroom instruction, rekindle pupils’ interest in the Igbo language and support efforts to preserve the state’s rich linguistic and cultural heritage.
