‎The Anambra State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing flooding and gully erosion, as the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, and the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, on July 9 inspected flood-prone and erosion-affected sites in Nkpor, Idemili North Local Government Area.
‎
‎
‎The inspection, carried out alongside the President-General of Nkpor, Chief Godwin Nnamdi Amadike, and the Acting Managing Director of the Anambra State Watershed, Erosion and Climate Change Agency (ANSWECCA), Engr. Ifeanyi Nwasinoke, focused on assessing the environmental and infrastructural challenges facing the community.
‎
‎
‎Speaking during the visit, Dr. Aguiyi condemned the indiscriminate dumping of refuse into drainage channels and waterways, describing the practice as a major contributor to blocked drains and recurrent flooding.
‎
‎
‎He observed that the gully threatening Government Technical College (GTC), Nkpor, appeared to have been caused by the obstruction of a natural watercourse and urged residents to protect drainage channels by reporting encroachments.
‎
‎
‎He reiterated that the state government would remove structures obstructing waterways where necessary to restore the natural flow of water and reduce flood risks.
‎
‎
‎The commissioner also called on residents to support Gov. Chukwuma Soludo’s Environmental Emergency initiative by maintaining proper sanitation, disposing of waste responsibly and safeguarding the environment.
‎
‎
‎Also speaking, Arc. Ezeobi attributed the deteriorating road network and increasing gully erosion in the area to persistent encroachment on natural flood channels.
‎
‎
‎He assured residents that Nkpor had been captured in the state government’s phased flood control intervention and reaffirmed that illegal structures blocking waterways would be removed to protect lives, property and public infrastructure.
‎
‎
‎The inspection highlights the soludo administration’s commitment to proactive environmental management and sustainable measures aimed at mitigating flooding and erosion across Anambra State.Suggested headlines:
