The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, Esq., has warned that all structures erected on waterways, drainage channels, and other unapproved locations across the state will be demolished as part of the government’s efforts to restore environmental sanity and prevent flooding.

Speaking to journalists in his office at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat, Awka, today June 11, Dr. Aguiyi noted that Anambra State remains a major destination for travelers and investors from different parts of Nigeria and must therefore be kept clean, safe, and habitable for all residents.

He expressed concern over the increasing rate of environmental violations caused by human activities, particularly the construction of buildings on drainage channels and natural waterways.

According to the commissioner, the administration of Governor Chukwuma Soludo will not tolerate environmental nuisance resulting from deliberate actions that endanger lives and property.

“Many people have distorted approved building plans and chosen to build wherever they like. Some erect structures on waterways, drainage channels, and other unapproved locations. Such actions contribute significantly to flooding and environmental degradation,” he said.

Dr. Aguiyi emphasized that offenders would face strict penalties in accordance with environmental laws, adding that government would take decisive action to reclaim blocked waterways and restore the state’s natural environment.

He further said that the Ministry of Environment is committed to sanitizing the system and preserving the aesthetic beauty of Anambra State, while ensuring a safer and more sustainable environment for present and future generations.
The commissioner urged Ndi Anambra to comply with environmental regulations and support the government’s efforts to build a cleaner, greener, and more livable state.
