Professor Sylvia Ifemeje’s tenure as Anambra’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice was marked by significant reforms that modernized the state’s justice system.
She tackled problematic garnishee orders head-on, drastically reducing attachments on government accounts through negotiations and prompt legal representation.
Ifemeje’s efforts led to the full digitalization and automation of the justice sector, enhancing efficiency and transparency. She also facilitated the drafting of 25 landmark executive bills, which were subsequently passed into law.
The establishment of specialized courts, including Sex and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) and Small Claims Courts, has improved access to justice for citizens.
Additionally, Ifemeje created an Sexual and Violent Based Violence (SGBV) unit within the Attorney General’s Chambers for diligent prosecution and it oversaw the construction of four judges’ quarters and six court halls, which are near completion.
To increase accessibility, she initiated the online hosting of Anambra laws, allowing citizens to easily access the laws.
The Nigerian Bar Association has praised Ifemeje’s humility, accessibility, and commitment to justice delivery, with members commending her transformative work in Anambra’s justice sector.
