The Executive Chairman of Anambra West Local Government Area, Hon. Mrs. Edith Nkeiru Ndive, has inspected designated Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps at Crowther Primary School, Onitsha, and Umueri Hall, Umueri, as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen emergency preparedness and response mechanisms within the local government area.

The June 17, inspection followed recent advisories issued by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) warning of the likelihood of heavy rainfall during the rainy season, which could lead to flooding in low lying communities, streets, and drainage channels across parts of the country.

During the visit, Hon. Mrs. Ndive assessed the condition and readiness of facilities at the camps to ensure that adequate arrangements are in place should emergency shelter and humanitarian assistance become necessary for residents affected by flooding or other weather related incidents.

Speaking during the inspection, the Mayor emphasized the importance of proactive planning and preparedness in mitigating the impact of potential disasters. She noted that early assessment of available facilities would enable government and relevant agencies to respond swiftly, efficiently, and effectively whenever the need arises.

Hon. Mrs. Ndive reaffirmed the commitment of the Anambra West Local Government Administration to safeguarding lives and property through coordinated emergency response measures and sustained collaboration with relevant disaster management agencies.

She also urged residents to remain vigilant, pay close attention to official weather advisories, take necessary precautions during periods of heavy rainfall, and cooperate with authorities in efforts aimed at protecting lives and property.

The inspection forms part of the local government’s broader commitment to disaster risk reduction, emergency preparedness, and the welfare and safety of residents throughout the rainy season.
