Anambra leaders have urged citizens to uphold patriotism, unity, peace and responsible citizenship as Nigeria marked its 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Barr. Vin Ifeanyi Ezeaka, made the call in a goodwill message, describing communities as the foundation of national development.

He urged Ndi Anambra at home and abroad to contribute to the development of their communities, Anambra and Nigeria, saying, “Our communities remain the foundation of a prosperous society.”

Also speaking, the Chairman, Anambra State Traditional Rulers’ Council (ASTRC) and Traditional Ruler of Obosi, Igwe Chidubem Iweka, commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for what he described as patriotic leadership and people-oriented programmes.

Iweka said the state’s free education and healthcare programmes, empowerment initiatives, skills acquisition schemes and support for startups had benefited residents. He acknowledged the challenges facing Nigeria but expressed optimism about the country’s development prospects.

He called for a peaceful, free and credible 2027 General Election, urging eligible Nigerians to vote for candidates and political parties of their choice without violence or electoral malpractice. He also advised youths against being used to perpetrate violence, cultism and other social vices.

The ASTRC Secretary-General and Traditional Ruler of Uke, Igwe Surveyor Charles Agbala, said Nigeria had recorded progress in 66 years but needed to address insecurity and inadequate electricity supply to attract investment, support businesses and accelerate economic growth.

Traditional Rulers of Umuawulu and Enugwu-Umuonyia, Igwe Joel Egwuonwu and Igwe Peter Ezeamama, respectively, expressed concern over the rising cost of living, fuel prices and the cost of essential commodities.
They urged governments to intensify efforts to address citizens’ challenges and expressed hope that the Renewed Hope Agenda would improve living conditions.
The traditional rulers urged youths to embrace hard work, integrity and patriotism and contribute to building a stronger Nigeria.
The anniversary featured the presentation of President Bola Tinubu’s address, titled “From Freedom to Prosperity,” by Gov. Soludo, a march past by security agencies, school children, uniformed and voluntary organisations, and awards to outstanding participating schools.
