The Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Afam Obidike, has expressed concern over several operational shortcomings identified during an inspection visit to the Comprehensive Medical Centre, Awkuzu.
During the visit, Dr. Obidike was dissatisfied to discover that no medical doctor was on duty at the facility. He emphasized the need for adequate deployment of healthcare professionals in public health institutions to ensure effective service delivery and quality patient care.
The commissioner also noted that the oxygen system installed in the hospital’s ambulance was not functional. He described the situation as unacceptable, given the essential role of ambulances in emergency medical response, and called for the immediate repair and proper maintenance of all critical emergency equipment.

In addition, Dr. Obidike raised concerns about the facility’s operational structure after it was revealed that the ambulance driver also serves as a security officer. He warned that such dual responsibilities could undermine the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency response services.
To address the challenges, the commissioner assured that the Ministry of Health would take prompt steps to deploy a dedicated ambulance driver to the facility.
Also speaking during the inspection, the Director of Medical Services, Dr. Ugochukwu Chukwulobelu, who accompanied the commissioner, expressed disappointment at the condition of the facility and called for urgent corrective measures to enhance healthcare delivery at the centre.
