The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, has on Oct 23 directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), Awka, to take over the investigation into the suspected murder of 23-year-old Mmesoma Umeorini in Uga, Aguata Local Government Area of the state. The directive followed the arrest of a male suspect, Chima Ofoeke, in connection with the incident.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the victim’s mother had earlier reported to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Umuchu Division, that her daughter had been missing since October 16, 2026, despite efforts to establish her whereabouts.
Ikenga disclosed that acting on intelligence-led information, police operatives, in collaboration with members of the Agunechemba security outfit in Uga, arrested the suspect, who was identified as the deceased’s alleged former boyfriend.
During preliminary interrogation, the suspect allegedly confessed to killing the victim following the breakdown of their relationship. He subsequently led detectives to the location where the remains of the deceased were discovered and recovered.
The Commissioner of Police has directed the SCID to conduct a comprehensive and diligent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident to ensure that justice is served.
The command reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across the state, while urging residents to promptly report missing persons and any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities. The police however, promised to report further developments as the investigation progresses.
