COMMENTARY
By Lilian Ezejiegu
As Anambra State marks 35 years of its creation, the anniversary provides an opportunity not only to celebrate the achievements of the past, but also to reflect on the kind of environment the state wants to leave for future generations.
This year’s focus on environmental sustainability is particularly significant. Anambra has witnessed rapid urbanisation, economic growth and infrastructural development, but these gains must go hand in hand with responsible environmental management.
The theme, “Our Environment, Our Future,” reminds every resident that environmental protection is not the responsibility of government alone. It requires the collective commitment of individuals, communities, businesses, institutions and other stakeholders.
From proper waste disposal and tree planting to erosion control, drainage maintenance and the protection of public spaces, everyday actions can either contribute to a healthier Anambra or worsen the challenges facing the state.
The decision to make environmental sustainability a central part of the 35th anniversary celebrations therefore sends a strong message: development must be sustainable, and progress must not come at the expense of the environment.
The celebration should also encourage citizens to see environmental cleanliness as a culture rather than an occasional government campaign. A cleaner Anambra begins with responsible citizens who understand that the streets, markets, waterways and communities belong to everyone.
As Anambra looks ahead to another chapter of growth, the 35th anniversary offers an opportunity to renew the collective commitment to building a state that is clean, green, organised and sustainable.
Our Environment, Our Future is therefore more than an anniversary theme. It is a call to action and a reminder that the Anambra we protect today is the Anambra we hand over to tomorrow’s generation.
