The Anambra State House of Assembly has invited key government officials to appear before the legislature to discuss measures aimed at preventing and mitigating flooding across the state.
The decision was reached during plenary on June 23 following growing concerns among lawmakers over the recurring incidence of flooding and its devastating impact on communities in Anambra.
The House resolved to summon the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi; the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Barr. Chijioke Oseloka Ojukwu; and the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Okey Ezeobi, to appear before the Assembly on June 25 at 2 p.m.
Presenting the motion of urgent public importance, the Minority Leader and member representing Nnewi South Constituency II, Hon. Johnbosco Akaegbobi, decried the destruction caused by flooding, noting that many residents have suffered significant losses due to blocked drainage systems and poor environmental practices.
He referenced a recent incident widely shared on social media in which floodwaters swept away a Toyota Venza vehicle, describing it as evidence of the growing severity of flooding in the state.
Supporting the motion, the Majority Leader, Sir Ikenna Ofodeme, alongside Hon. Tony Muobike (Aguata Constituency II), Barr. Obi Nweke (Anambra East Constituency), and Engr. Emma Nwafor (Orumba South Constituency), observed that flooding continues to wreak havoc on homes, farmlands, roads, and other infrastructure, particularly in commercial hubs such as Onitsha, Nnewi, and Awka.
The lawmakers attributed much of the problem to indiscriminate waste disposal, which has obstructed drainage channels and worsened flood situations in many areas.
They also cited reports of a tricycle operator who reportedly lost his life during a flood incident in Onitsha. The legislators called for improved drainage channelization, the provision of adequate discharge points, increased public sensitization on proper waste disposal, and the construction of catchment facilities in residential areas. They emphasized that safeguarding lives and property remains a fundamental responsibility of government.
In his remarks, the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Somtochukwu Udeze, expressed optimism that the resolution would contribute significantly to addressing flooding challenges in the state. He reiterated that lawmakers have a duty to represent and protect the interests of Ndi Anambra.
