The ancient town of Amawbia in Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State will on September 26, come alive as it celebrates its 2026 New Yam Festival (Iwa Ji).
The festival, which is a grand celebration of Igbo culture, unity and tradition, will bring together traditional rulers, community leaders, sons and daughters of Amawbia at home and in the Diaspora, as well as friends and well-wishers from far and near.
In Igbo tradition, the New Yam Festival is more than a celebration of food. It is a symbol of life and prosperity, representing thanksgiving, abundance, hard work, renewal, family, community and hope for greater harvest.
It is a period when the people appreciate the blessings of the land, honour their heritage and transmit cherished cultural values from one generation to another.
The event is scheduled as follows:
Date: Saturday, 26th September, 2026
Venue: Eziokpaligwe Square, Awka South LGA, Anambra State.
Time: 12 noon prompt
The community cordially invites sons and daughters, friends, families and lovers of culture to come and witness the colour, beauty and grandeur of Amawbia cultural heritage and share in the joy of Iri Ji Ọhụrụ.
