The Anambra State Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, has called for stronger collaboration between the Ministry of Environment and the Anambra State Markets Amalgamated Traders Association, ASMATA, to improve environmental sanitation and enforcement across markets in the state.
Dr. Aguiyi made the call on August 23, during a stakeholders’ meeting at the ASMATA Secretariat, Odakpu, Onitsha.
The meeting brought together the ASMATA President-General and leadership, ASMATA youths, members of the Makeway Team, prospective members of the Environmental Enforcement Taskforce and other stakeholders.
The commissioner said environmental protection is a collective responsibility, requiring the active participation of market leaders, traders, youths and communities.
He identified proper waste management, clean drainage systems, improved sanitation, noise pollution control and sustained environmental monitoring as key areas requiring greater attention in markets.
Dr. Aguiyi stressed that environmental enforcement must be professional, disciplined, transparent and guided by due process, with clearly defined reporting and communication channels.
He also highlighted the role of ASMATA youths in environmental sensitisation, cleanliness campaigns and identifying environmental challenges within markets.
The commissioner urged the stakeholders to support the state government’s efforts to achieve a cleaner and healthier Anambra, while inviting the ASMATA leadership, Makeway Team and youths to participate in the forthcoming Anambra at 35 celebration on August 27.
The stakeholders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Ministry of Environment and supporting the state government’s efforts toward improved environmental sanitation and compliance across markets in Anambra.
