The Anambra State Hospital Administrator, Dr. Frank Ifeanaeme, has cautioned residents against self-medication, warning that taking drugs without proper medical guidance can result in serious health complications and, in severe cases, death.
Dr. Ifeanaeme gave the warning on Aug. 21 during an interview with a health correspondent, where he stressed the importance of proper diagnosis, correct dosage and professional guidance in the use of medicines.
He explained that inappropriate drug combinations, incorrect dosages and indiscriminate use of medications could worsen existing health conditions, cause harmful reactions and delay appropriate treatment.
The hospital administrator advised residents to consult qualified healthcare professionals before taking medications, noting that treatment should be based on proper assessment of each patient’s condition.
He warned against patronising unqualified persons and drug vendors who prescribe or combine medicines without the necessary training and knowledge of their possible effects.
According to him, trained healthcare providers are better equipped to determine the appropriate medication, dosage and duration of treatment based on a patient’s specific needs.
Dr. Ifeanaeme, therefore, urged residents to make responsible healthcare choices by seeking medical advice whenever they are unwell and obtaining medicines from approved sources.
