As the world marks the International Day for People of African Descent on Aug. 31, Anambra State joins the global community in celebrating the history, identity, achievements and enduring resilience of people of African descent.

The observance is an opportunity to recognise the contributions of Africans and people of African descent to culture, education, business, science, governance, the arts and other fields, while drawing attention to the need to address discrimination and inequality.

In Anambra, the celebration resonates with a people whose identity is deeply rooted in Igbo culture, communal values, enterprise and a strong tradition of self-reliance.

Across generations, Ndi Anambra have built a reputation for entrepreneurship, education and community development, with many making significant contributions both within Nigeria and across the world.

The state’s rich cultural heritage is reflected in its festivals, traditional institutions, indigenous arts, language and communal traditions, which continue to connect younger generations with their roots.

Beyond its cultural identity, Anambra’s people have also demonstrated a remarkable capacity to adapt, create opportunities and build communities in different parts of Nigeria and beyond. Their achievements continue to add to the wider story of African ingenuity and perseverance.

The International Day for People of African Descent also provides an opportunity to challenge stereotypes and promote greater appreciation of Africa’s diverse peoples, histories and contributions to global development.

For Anambra, the occasion is a reminder that progress does not require abandoning identity. Rather, cultural heritage can provide a strong foundation for innovation, responsible citizenship and sustainable development.

The Prof. Chukwuma Soludo led administration’s development agenda places emphasis on building a state where enterprise, education, innovation and community participation can thrive, while preserving the values that define its people.

As Anambra joins the global observance, the focus is not only on where people of African descent have come from, but also on what they continue to contribute and the possibilities that lie ahead.

The story of Africa is a story of people who have endured, created, rebuilt and achieved. For Anambra, African Descent Day offers a moment to celebrate that heritage, inspire the younger generation and reaffirm pride in a shared identity.
