‎The Mayor-elect of Onitsha North Local Government Area, Hon. Emelie Ibekwe, has expressed appreciation to residents and supporters for entrusting her with their mandate, pledging to provide responsive, inclusive and people-oriented governance.
‎
‎Hon Ibekwe, in a statement following the Aug. 29 local government election, thanked residents for their support, prayers and mobilisation throughout the political process, from the primary election to the campaign.
‎
‎She recalled the Ward Tour through which the Onitsha North Agenda Project visited all 15 political wards in the local government area to engage residents and present her vision for grassroots development.
‎
‎According to her, the election gave the people an opportunity to determine the direction they wanted for governance at the local level, stressing that the mandate entrusted to her came with a significant responsibility to serve.
‎
‎The Mayor-elect also commended all those who participated in the electoral process, particularly supporters who mobilised voters and stood by the campaign throughout the various stages of the contest.
‎
‎She said her victory should not be seen as a personal reward but as a call to service, accountability and delivery of good governance. “I will not betray your trust. This mandate is not a reward; it is a responsibility. It is a solemn commitment to serve, to listen, to deliver, and to put the people first,” Ibekwe said.
‎
‎She assured residents that her administration would work towards building an Onitsha North that reflects the aspirations and expectations of its people.
‎
‎Hon. Ibekwe further declared that the political contest had ended and that the focus must now shift to governance, with the Onitsha North Agenda Project entering its next phase.
‎
‎She called for collective support and cooperation as the incoming administration prepares to translate its campaign promises into concrete development initiatives across the 15 wards.
