ACCIONA held an assessment workshop in Awka to align the stakeholders with the technical partnership needed to deliver a safer and smarter capital city. The event held on June 18, at Awka South Council Hall, Amawbia drew ACCIONA’s technical team, government officials, and community stakeholders.
Discussions were focused on milestones, risk assessment, quality control, and timelines for infrastructure and clean energy projects. Four teams reviewed environmental impacts, governance, finance, and community engagement plans to ensure projects meet global standards and local needs.

Declaring the workshop open, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Clem Aguiyi, who represented the Governor, pledged Anambra State Government’s support for the AfDB Africa Cities Programme. The Mayor of Awka South, Hon. Chinedu Okafor, also assured the council’s commitment to achieving the programme in line with Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s vision.
ACCIONA Project Lead, Eliza Maceratini, said the stakeholder’s workshop was very critical in explaining the project scope, with focus on land use, environmental management, and climate resilience. “We’re delivering sustainable infrastructure that impacts Anambra communities. This workshop helps us close gaps early,” she stated.

The session ended with commendation from the Managing Director of Awka Capital Territory Development Authority, Dr. Ossy Onuko and a call for stronger collaboration between ACCIONA, the State government, and host communities to fast-track completion.

Onuko explained that the workshop aims to develop a comprehensive City Action Plan and bankable infrastructure projects capable of attracting sustainable investments and accelerating urban transformation within the capital territory.
