‎As the world marks World Teachers’ Day on October 5, attention is once again focused on the crucial role teachers play in shaping the future of children, communities and society. The occasion provides an opportunity to recognise their contributions and reflect on the support required to strengthen the teaching profession.
‎
‎The 2026 celebration is being observed under the theme, “Standing with teachers: 60 years of protecting the profession, advancing its status and shaping our futures.” The theme commemorates the 60th anniversary of the 1966 ILO/UNESCO Recommendation concerning the Status of Teachers and highlights the importance of professional recognition, improved status and better working conditions for educators.
‎
‎In Anambra State, the celebration offers an opportunity to assess the contribution of teachers to the state’s education system and ongoing efforts to improve teaching and learning in public schools.
‎

The state government has recruited about 8,115 teachers into public schools, alongside investments in teacher development and digital skills, while 22 Smart Schools have been established as part of efforts to modernise education and integrate technology into classrooms.
‎
‎The state’s education reforms have also prioritised continuous professional development. In June 2026, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ekene Ogugua, identified teacher training, digital transformation, professionalism, teamwork and quality assurance as key areas for improving educational outcomes.
‎
Beyond policies and infrastructure, teachers remain the critical link between educational programmes and the pupils they serve, helping young people develop knowledge, discipline, confidence, creativity and practical skills.
‎
‎Recognition of teachers has also featured in local initiatives across the state. In Aguata, plans for the 2026 Education Day included awards for outstanding primary and secondary school teachers in recognition of their dedication and professional performance.
‎
For Anambra to sustain its education reforms, continued investment in teacher training, improved school facilities, wider access to digital tools and supportive working environments will be essential to equipping teachers to prepare pupils for a rapidly changing world.
