As the world marks World Rainforest Day on June 22, attention is focused on the vital role forests play in protecting ecosystems, preserving biodiversity and mitigating the effects of climate change.

In Anambra State, Governor Chukwuma Soludo’s administration has placed environmental sustainability at the forefront of its development agenda through a series of forest conservation and tree planting initiatives aimed at addressing erosion and climate-related challenges.

One of the key strategies adopted by the administration is the annual tree planting campaign across the state’s 181 communities, encouraging to plant and nurture trees, helping to restore vegetation cover, strengthening the natural environment. The roots of these trees help bind the soil, reducing the risk of gully erosion, a major environmental challenge in many parts of the state.

The government has distributed millions of economic tree seedlings, including palm and coconut varieties, to communities, schools, churches and other institutions. Beyond their economic value, these trees provide protective ground cover that helps prevent soil degradation and land loss.

In erosion-prone areas, the administration has supported afforestation and forest restoration projects designed to rehabilitate degraded lands,  increasing tree cover around vulnerable sites, helping reduce surface runoff, improving soil stability and protect communities from further environmental damage.

Environmental experts note that forest conservation also plays a critical role in combating climate change. Trees absorb carbon dioxide, one of the major greenhouse gases responsible for global warming, helping to reduce carbon emissions in the atmosphere.

The Soludo administration has promoted urban greening through tree planting along roads, public spaces and other strategic locations, contributing to improved air quality, reduced heat levels and a healthier environment for residents.

In addition, climate resilience programmes, environmental protection policies and conservation initiatives introduced by the government are helping to strengthen Anambra’s capacity to adapt to the growing impacts of climate change.

As the state joins the global community in celebrating World Rainforest Day, stakeholders say the ongoing investment in forest conservation is yielding environmental benefits by reducing erosion, restoring degraded lands, enhancing biodiversity and building a more climate resilient Anambra.

The initiatives reflect a broader commitment to creating a greener, safer and more sustainable future for present and future generations.
