Strengthening routine immunisation, public health education and disease surveillance is essential to protecting children in Anambra against poliomyelitis, a viral disease that can cause permanent paralysis.

Observed annually on Oct. 24, World Polio Day highlights the need for sustained vaccination efforts and collective action to eradicate the disease.

Polio is a highly infectious disease that affects the nervous system and can cause irreversible paralysis, particularly in children under five.

Although vaccination campaigns have significantly reduced cases globally, continued immunisation remains necessary to prevent transmission and protect vulnerable populations.

In Anambra, sustained investment in routine immunisation and preventive healthcare would help ensure that children across the state have access to recommended vaccines.

The state government needs to strengthen existing immunisation programmes, expand public health education and ensure that children in both urban and rural communities receive polio vaccines in line with the recommended schedule.

Parents and guardians also have a responsibility to ensure that their children receive the required vaccine doses and cooperate with healthcare workers during immunisation campaigns. They should seek reliable medical advice whenever they have concerns about vaccination or their children’s health.

Traditional rulers, religious leaders, community organisations and the media can support these efforts by raising awareness about the benefits of vaccination, addressing misinformation and encouraging participation in immunisation programmes.

Healthcare workers also require adequate training, essential medical supplies and logistical support to reach children in underserved communities. Effective disease surveillance is equally important for identifying suspected cases and enabling prompt responses to potential outbreaks.

Eradicating polio requires sustained funding, public cooperation and accessible healthcare services. For Anambra, strengthening immunisation and preventive healthcare would help protect children from avoidable illness and support efforts to build a healthier population.
