‎As the world marks World Maritime Day on Sept. 24, attention has been drawn to the importance of the maritime sector in transportation, trade, economic development and environmental sustainability.
‎
‎The observance is particularly significant to Anambra State, which is endowed with extensive waterways capable of connecting communities, facilitating commerce and creating new opportunities for economic growth.
‎
‎Under the Solution Agenda of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, the state government continues to pursue a liveable and prosperous homeland where infrastructure, enterprise and economic opportunities contribute to the wellbeing of Ndi Anambra.
‎
‎Safe and efficient water transportation remains essential to achieving these objectives. Proper regulation of waterways, the use of life-saving equipment, engagement of qualified boat operators and strict adherence to safety standards are necessary to protect lives and build public confidence in water transport.
‎
‎Beyond transportation, the state’s waterways offer opportunities for tourism, fisheries and other maritime-related economic activities that could contribute to employment and improve livelihoods. However, unlocking these opportunities requires responsible management and sustained protection of the aquatic environment.
‎
‎World Maritime Day also serves as a reminder that economic development must go hand in hand with environmental responsibility. Keeping waterways free from harmful waste and protecting aquatic ecosystems are shared responsibilities among government agencies, operators, communities and other waterway users.
‎
‎As Anambra continues to invest in infrastructure and economic development, the effective utilisation of its waterways can complement road transportation while expanding opportunities for trade, tourism and employment.
‎
‎The Ministry of Information and Value Reformation has therefore encouraged Ndi Anambra to regard the state’s waterways not only as natural resources but also as valuable assets requiring protection, responsible use and strategic development.
‎
‎On World Maritime Day, the state reiterates the importance of safe waterways, responsible practices and sustainable development in unlocking the economic potential of Anambra’s maritime resources and advancing the vision of a more liveable and prosperous homeland.
