As the world marks World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the Anambra State Government under Governor Chukwuma Soludo is highlighting efforts aimed at improving the welfare, health and social inclusion of elderly residents across the state.
Since assuming office, the Soludo administration has introduced and supported initiatives designed to enhance the quality of life of senior citizens, recognizing their contributions to society and the need to protect them from neglect, abuse and social exclusion.

One of the most notable interventions is the Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo initiative, through which more than 26,000 elderly persons across Anambra’s 326 wards received free multivitamin supplements to support healthy ageing and overall wellbeing. The programme specifically targeted senior citizens who are often vulnerable to age-related health challenges and inadequate access to healthcare.
Beyond healthcare support, the administration has consistently advocated greater respect, care and protection for older persons, encouraging families and communities to uphold the dignity of senior citizens, ensuring they remain integrated into society rather than being neglected or abandoned.
The government has taken steps toward institutionalizing elderly care in the state, as well as outlining plans for programmes and facilities dedicated to the welfare of older persons, reflecting a long-term commitment to addressing their needs.
In a further demonstration of this commitment, Governor Soludo in 2025 inaugurated an elderly care and rehabilitation home in Anambra State, pledging continued government support for its operations, expecting to expand access to care and social support services for vulnerable senior citizens.
While these interventions have been widely welcomed, stakeholders note that protecting the elderly requires sustained action in areas such as healthcare access, social security, pension administration, protection from abuse and effective implementation of welfare policies.
Nevertheless, as the global community commemorates World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, the Soludo administration can point to tangible efforts in healthcare delivery, elderly care services and advocacy as part of its broader commitment to safeguarding the dignity, wellbeing and rights of older persons in Anambra State.
