As the world marks World Blood Donor Day on June 14, a Senior Medical Officer at the Government House Clinic, Awka, Dr. Nonye Ezeonyejiaku, has called on residents of Anambra State to embrace voluntary blood donation, describing it as a critical lifeline for patients in need.

Speaking ahead of the 2026 observance, Dr. Ezeonyejiaku noted that the annual event is dedicated to appreciating voluntary blood donors while encouraging more people to donate blood and help save lives.

She emphasized that blood donation remains a vital component of healthcare delivery, particularly during emergencies.

According to her, many patients including pregnant women experiencing severe bleeding, accident victims, children with severe anaemia, individuals living with sickle cell disease, and surgical patients depend on blood transfusions daily for survival.

The medical expert, however, expressed concern over the persistent shortage of blood in hospitals across the state, especially during emergencies. She explained that families are often forced to search for donors at short notice, a situation that can delay treatment and, in some cases, result in the loss of lives.

“Regular voluntary blood donation is key to preventing such challenges by ensuring that safe blood is readily available when needed,” she said.

Dr. Ezeonyejiaku further explained that blood cannot be manufactured or purchased, stressing that it can only be obtained from healthy individuals who willingly donate.

Addressing common fears surrounding blood donation, she reassured the public that the process is safe, simple, and conducted by trained healthcare professionals using sterile equipment. She added that prospective donors are properly screened to ensure they are fit to donate.

“Most donors return to their normal activities shortly after the process,” she noted.

She also highlighted that a single blood donation can save multiple lives, underscoring the need to build a strong culture of voluntary blood donation across Anambra State.

The doctor called on community leaders, religious organizations, schools, and workplaces to intensify awareness campaigns and encourage eligible individuals to become regular blood donors.

“As we commemorate this year’s World Blood Donor Day, I urge all healthy residents of Anambra State to consider donating blood. You may never know whose life you will save, but your generosity could give someone a second chance at life,” she said.

Dr. Ezeonyejiaku further called for collective action to ensure that safe blood is always available for those in need.
