WORK BEGINS ON GENEVA ROAD AS SOLUDO ADVANCES AWKA URBAN RENEWAL

By MaryAnn Chukwuma

Reconstruction has commenced on Geneva Road, also known as Second Abakaliki Street, Awka, following the approval of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, as part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and transform the state capital.

The project, observed on Aug. 5 is one of the urban renewal initiatives of the Soludo administration aimed at enhancing road connectivity and easing movement within Awka.

Geneva Road is a major commercial and leisure corridor, hosting hotels, restaurants, lounges and other businesses that contribute significantly to the city’s economy.

The road had remained in a deplorable condition for more than eight years, creating difficulties for motorists, residents, business owners and visitors.

Construction equipment and personnel have been mobilised to the site, with work progressing in line with approved engineering standards to ensure timely completion.

On completion, the road is expected to improve traffic flow, enhance safety and provide easier access to businesses, residential neighbourhoods and recreational facilities along the corridor.

The project is also expected to boost commercial activities, attract investment and improve the overall environment within the Awka Capital Territory.

The reconstruction underscores the Soludo administration’s commitment to modernising critical infrastructure, promoting sustainable urban development and improving the quality of life of residents.

Residents and business operators have welcomed the intervention, expressing optimism that the project will ease transportation challenges and support economic growth in the area.
