ANAMBRA GOVT REFORMS PROPERTY TAX ADMINISTRATION AS AIRS ROLLS OUT REVISED APLUC PROCESS

By MaryAnn Chukwuma

‎The Anambra State Government has introduced a revised assessment, billing and payment process for the Anambra Property and Land Use Charge (APLUC), reinforcing its commitment to a more transparent, efficient and technology-driven property tax administration.

‎In a public notice issued on August 5, signed by the Executive Chairman, Ikeazor Okonkwo, FCA, FCTI, AIRS announced the commencement of the revised Demand Notice issuance process statewide.

‎According to the Service, the initiative is designed to improve service delivery, strengthen property tax administration and ensure a more accountable and seamless revenue collection system for sustainable development.

‎AIRS explained that all APLUC assessments and Demand Notices will be issued solely by the Service, warning property owners and occupiers against making payments to individuals or unauthorized persons.

‎The service advised taxpayers to make payments only through approved Anambra State Government payment channels indicated on official AIRS Demand Notices and to carefully verify property details, assessments, applicable charges and payment instructions before payment.

‎Property owners requiring clarification or wishing to verify their assessments were encouraged to contact AIRS through its official communication channels before making any payment to avoid fraudulent transactions.

‎AIRS further reminded taxpayers that the Property and Land Use Charge is a statutory obligation under the Anambra Property and Land Use Charge Law, 2011, warning that failure to pay within the prescribed period will attract statutory penalties.

‎The notice stated that defaulters will incur a 2.5 percent monthly penalty on outstanding amounts for a maximum of three months, in addition to other enforcement measures provided by law, including the appointment of a receiver over the property where applicable.

‎The service reaffirmed its commitment to promoting voluntary tax compliance through a fair, transparent, technology-driven and accountable property tax system that supports the sustainable development of Anambra State.
