The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Anambra State Chapter, observed International Women’s Day at the Dora Akunyili Women Development Centre, Awka, with a gathering of women from various organizations, including the Nigeria Girl Guides Association, Nigeria Labour Congress, Catholic Women Organisation, and Federation of Muslim Women in Nigeria, among others.
In her opening remarks, the Chairperson of the occasion, Barr. Oge Ekweozor, emphasized the 2026 theme, “Give to Gain,” as a call to reciprocity and support, saying that contributions from individuals and organizations can increase opportunities for women. She urged women to emulate good morals, shun pride, and stay grounded.
NAWOJ Anambra Chairperson, Comrade Tochukwu Ifejika, celebrated women’s achievements and emphasized that uplifting women benefits society as a whole. She commended Governor Chukwuma Soludo for appointing women to key cabinet roles, demonstrating his confidence in their abilities.

The Keynote Speaker, Prof. Chinyere Stella Okunna addressed cultural and religious barriers hindering women’s participation in politics and leadership, urging women to speak out and support each other. The event honored remarkable women in various fields, offering insights and inspiration to others.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, expressed gratitude for the award received and pledged to continue ensuring the safety of citizens. Other speakers, including Lady Eucheria Uyawanne and Hajia Maryam, encouraged women to stand firm, believe in themselves, and claim their rights.
Awards were presented to notable individuals, including the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Christian Aburime, and the Vice Chancellor of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Prof. Kate Omenugha. The event featured music, cake-cutting, and award presentations.
