The Chief Vehicle Inspection Officer of the Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) Department, Ministry of Transport, Anambra State, Mr. MacDonald Achuam, has said that vehicle inspection is not merely a regulatory requirement but a critical measure for protecting lives and promoting road safety.

Speaking on the importance of routine vehicle inspection on Thursday, Achuam noted that many road crashes can be prevented when motorists ensure their vehicles are roadworthy. According to him, the department’s inspections focus on essential safety components such as brakes, tyres, lights, steering systems, and other mechanical parts that could pose risks if left unchecked.

“Vehicle inspection is not about issuing certificates alone; it is about saving lives,” Achuam said. “When a vehicle is properly maintained and certified roadworthy, the chances of accidents caused by mechanical failure are greatly reduced. We encourage motorists to see inspection as a safety measure rather than a burden.”

Also speaking, the Head of the Accident Investigation Unit of the department, Mr. Daniel Onyeka Eze, emphasized the importance of accident investigations in improving road safety. He explained that the unit examines crash incidents to identify their causes and recommend preventive measures. “Every accident investigation provides lessons that can help prevent future occurrences. Our goal is not just to determine what happened, but to ensure similar incidents do not happen again,” Eze stated.

The VIS Department reiterated its commitment to ensuring safer roads across Anambra State through effective vehicle inspections, accident investigations, public enlightenment campaigns, and enforcement of roadworthiness standards. The department urged motorists to cooperate with vehicle inspectors and prioritize regular vehicle maintenance, stressing that road safety remains a collective responsibility.
