The Federal Government, in partnership with the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) through its Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP), has strengthened initiatives aimed at promoting improved nutrition and healthy food consumption among rural farming households in Anambra State.
Addressing participants at the farmers’ training session in Awka, the State Programme Coordinator of the Anambra VCDP, Dr. Deborah Onyefulu, stated that the initiative was conceived to combat malnutrition within rural communities.
Dr. Onyefulu, who was represented by the Rural Institutions, Gender and Youth Mainstreaming Officer, Mr. Ikechukwu Anyasie, explained that the training was specifically targeted at women and youths.
She disclosed that participants received instruction on the preparation of nutritious meals utilising locally available crops, including cassava, rice, and cowpea, with the objective of encouraging households to embrace balanced diets.
Dr. Onyefulu also revealed that the programme provides support to women’s groups and cooperatives through the provision of modern agro-processing equipment and capacity-building initiatives designed to facilitate value addition and augment income generation.
Also speaking, the VCDP State Nutrition Officer, Mrs. Chinwe Ekwelie, stressed the importance of integrating nutrition education into rural communities to improve household nutrition outcomes.
She noted that sustained awareness and practical training would empower families to make healthier food choices and improve their overall quality of life.
