The Holy See has appointed Most Rev. Ernest Obodo as Apostolic Administrator of the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, to ensure continuity of leadership following the death of its Bishop, Most Rev. Peter Chukwu.
The appointment, communicated via an official decree from the Vatican, takes immediate effect and has been followed by a formal meeting of the Diocese’s College of Consultors, in accordance with canonical provisions governing.
The transition became necessary following the passing of Bishop Chukwu on April 10, 2026. His death has elicited tributes and prayers from the Catholic community across Nigeria.
In reaction to the development, the Secretary General of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, Very Rev. Fr. Michael Banjo, solicited prayers for both the new Administrator and the bereaved faithful.
He expressed confidence that Bishop Obodo would be granted the requisite grace to guide the Diocese during this interim period.
