Nnamdi Azikiwe University has officially upgraded its Mass Communication Department to the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, a move the university says will deepen specialised training and advance scholarship in the communication discipline.
The new Faculty is organised into five departments: Advertising, Broadcasting, Development Communication Studies, Journalism and Media Studies, and Mass Communication. The structure is designed to offer students clearer pathways for academic specialization and professional preparation.
Announcing the development on July 7, Acting Dean Prof. Allen Nnanwuba Adum expressed excitement and gratitude to university staff and stakeholders who supported the upgrade.
He described the change as a milestone that will expand opportunities for teaching, research, innovation and industry engagement within the communication field.
University officials say the upgrade will strengthen curriculum delivery and foster closer links between academic programs and contemporary media practice. The move is expected to encourage specialised research and create a platform for interdisciplinary collaboration across related fields.
The establishment of the Faculty aligns with the university’s broader strategy to grow academic offerings and respond to global trends in media and communication. It also aims to equip graduates with the skills required by an evolving media landscape.
Faculty leaders plan to roll out enhanced programmes and initiatives that will support student professional development, industry partnerships and community-focused communication projects. The university says further details on new curricula and recruitment will be released in due course.
The creation of the Faculty marks a significant step in UNIZIK’s efforts to position itself as a centre of excellence for communication and media studies in the region.
