The University on the Niger recorded another milestone on Friday May 15, 2026, with the successful holding of its 3rd Matriculation Ceremony, formally admitting a new set of students and restating its commitment to academic excellence, character formation, and global relevance.
The ceremony, held at the university’s campus in Umunya, featured addresses that highlighted the institution’s steady progress since inception and offered guidance to the newly admitted students.

In his opening remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, described the matriculation as a defining moment in the lives of the students. He urged them to position themselves for global impact and to maximize the opportunities available at the institution.
Prof. Nebo identified three essential pillars for success diligence, an entrepreneurial mindset, and the judicious use of artificial intelligence and advised the students to uphold these principles throughout their academic journey. “You are privileged to be part of this great institution. Embrace these values, as they will guide you toward excellence and achievement”.

Demonstrating the university’s commitment to academic distinction, the Vice-Chancellor announced a cash award of N500,000 each to seven students who achieved a CGPA of 4.5 and above. The gesture drew applause and underscored the institution’s emphasis on rewarding outstanding performance.
Earlier in his address, the Chancellor, His Lordship Rt. Rev. Owen Chiedozie Nwokolo, congratulated the students and commended the university’s rapid development, particularly the successful accreditation of all academic programmes. He lauded the Vice-Chancellor and management for their steadfast dedication to the institution’s core values.

Rev. Nwokolo also stated that their admission was both a privilege and a responsibility. “You are now ambassadors of the ideals and values that define the University on the Niger,” he added, urging them to reject mediocrity and pursue excellence in academics, character, and conduct.
The keynote speaker, Hon. Justice Pete Obiora, urged the students to view their admission as the beginning of greater opportunities. Citing Plato, he noted that “the beginning is the most important part of the work,” and encouraged them to approach learning as a disciplined pursuit of wisdom and personal growth. He also cautioned against negative associations and commended the university leadership and staff for their role in nurturing future leaders.
In his vote of thanks, the Pro-Chancellor, Sir Ikechukwu Ejelue, expressed gratitude to the University authorizes, management, students, parents, and guardian for their presence and support, describing the occasion as another significant step in the institution’s pursuit of excellence.
