The Anambra State Police Command has raised alarm over a rising trend of citizens aggressively filming officers while they perform lawful duties, saying such behaviour often provokes insults, creates hostility in public spaces, and can jeopardize public safety and ongoing police operations.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Command acknowledges and respects the constitutional right of citizens to record public officers in the course of their duties, it warned that this right must be exercised responsibly and within the law. Police said recording must not escalate into harassment, intimidation, stalking officers with cameras, verbal abuse, physical confrontation, or any form of obstruction that interferes with legitimate policing activities.
The Command emphasized that when officers are distracted, insulted, or obstructed during active engagements, their ability to carry out duties safely and effectively especially in sensitive security situations is adversely affected.
Pointing to practices in many advanced societies, the police urged residents to balance demands for accountability with respect for boundaries that enable officers to work safely, and to use lawful channels to seek redress where necessary.
The Anambra State Police Command therefore called on the public, content creators, and social media users to remain law-abiding, cooperate with security agencies, and avoid actions that obstruct officers carrying out their duties. The Command reiterated its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and protecting the rights and safety of all Ndi Anambra.
